Literacy Blog #1

Hi, my name is Chaylene Murray, this is my blog for Mr. Toms English class. I enjoy reading mystery books, they are my absolute favourite! I love music, I don't know what I would do without it. I'm a huge fan of Ed Sheeran. I find his lyrics very meaningful. I'm very athletic, I love being active. Volleyball is a passion of mine, it puts a smile on my face. My favourite place to be in the summer is at my cabin in Ontario! I have learned that no matter what, family always comes first...always. I love to laugh and see others happy, but I also know when to be serious. I'm shy at first, but once you get to know me I'm actually the complete opposite. I'm the type of person that can joke around with others. I hate it when people judge others, especially if they don't know them. Nobody's perfect, so why put others down if you have no clue what they're like, or who they are. It's like judging a book by its cover, you can't judge it until you read it. I strongly dislike fake people, be yourself. Be who you are, not who others are. This explains who I am and what makes me, me.

The book I am reading is called Tweaked by Katherine Holubitsky. This book is about a sixteen year old boy named Gordie Jessup and his eighteen year old brother Chase Jessup. Chase is a drug addict and has been hooked on crystal meth for two years. He has put his family in a terrible emotional and financial position. The book begins with Chase whacking a guy over the head with a bottle and putting the guy in the hospital in a coma. His parents pay bail, putting Gordie’s family in even more debt, but bringing Chase home on probation. Chase has debts of his own he has to pay off to his old dealers. Gordie tries to help, thinking this would be the last time Chase would ever see the dealers. Gordie gets two thousand dollars, all the money he has to pay off Chase’s debts. Gordie eventually gets tricked by Chase, and Chase only pays off five hundred dollars of his debt and escaped. Gordie returns home and finds out that Chase is now wanted for murder, Richard Cross, the guy Chase put in the hospital, is now dead. Chase causes much more trouble. Chase gets caught in the end and he ends up in the hospital and his parents find out he is brain dead, and his parents pull the plug.

Chase is eighteen years old. He is the older brother of sixteen year old Gordie Jessup. He is all into drugs and can't take his hands off of them. Drugs got the best of him, causing him to skip class and drop out of school. He has been addicted to crystal meth for two years. Chase has put his family in many bad positions through his drug problems.Chase is nothing like his brother, he gets into trouble a ton. From his drug addiction...he leaves his family living a tough life, always wondering and worried about him. He doesn't really care much about his family he steals and lies to them constantly to continue with his drug life. Chase is the type of teenage boy that is all about drugs and there is no way you can stop him no matter how hard you try. He doesn't exactly listen to what others say, he just wants to get back to his dealers.

This book doesn't take place in a specific location. It moves around a lot. They're at their house, in the car and appear in many different places. It doesn't just happen in one area. The situation happens throughout a long time period, for days, weeks and months. From what I've noticed of the setting and what's going on in this book, it reminds me of television shows such as intervention. This show is about people having problems with drugs and get help to step away from them. This show takes time for the addict to stop with their addiction of drugs. Their is also a show called Cops, which is also about people doing drugs. This show is of cops chasing or pulling over vehicles that are inspected for drugs and alcohol. I can see the connection between these two television shows and the book Tweaked. Although the book doesn't have one specific location for the setting, from the parts of where certain situations happen, these shows relate to kinda of the same type of thing.
